Beautiful Smile without Ugly Braces?
Yes, with Invisalign®
If you have crooked or uneven teeth, you understand how important your smile is. While we all wish that looks were not that important, most of us acknowledge that our self-image would improve if we weren’t embarrassed by our smile.
Thanks to Invisalign®, Magnolia Family Dental offers an excellent opportunity to straighten your teeth without many of the disadvantages of traditional metal braces. Invisalign® clear braces are also referred to as “adult braces”, thanks to most adults preferring them over metal braces (who knew that adults could be as image conscious as teens?).
What is Invisalign®?
Invisalign® is the modern approach to straightening your teeth. Instead of metal, wire and elastic bands, Invisalign® uses a series of custom-made aligners specifically created for your teeth. The aligner is somewhat similar to an athletic mouth guard, but is much less visible, more comfortable, and obviously serves a different purpose. The dentist uses 3D computer imaging to create a custom plan, with a series of aligners that you change every few weeks. The aligners slowly and gradually move your teeth in place, just like traditional braces, but without many of the disadvantages.
Invisalign® offers several unique advantages over traditional braces
- Transparent and therefore less visible. No unsightly metal, wires, or rubber bands.
- Easily removed. This means you can still eat your favorite foods (such as popcorn). It also means you can brush and floss like you normally do, unlike with regular braces. Finally, you can take it out for pictures or special events.
- No painful mouth blisters, common with metal braces.
- No need to mess with changing your elastic bands.
- Fewer appointments and adjustments needed.
Are there any disadvantages to Invisalign®?
That’s a great question, and in fact, Invisalign® is not for everyone. First of all, even though teens would certainly benefit from the cosmetic advantages of Invisalign®, there is a downside to having removable braces. Since the aligner is taken out during meals, users, especially teenagers, may have a tendency to leave them on their lunch tray and accidentally throw them out when they’re done eating. This is not catastrophic, as the aligner can be replaced, but it means you’ll have to pay extra to replace it. Obviously, if it happens more than once or twice, the extra costs can add up. Sort of like wearing contacts vs. glasses, contacts are cosmetically more attractive but much easier to lose than glasses, and thus potentially more expensive.
Another con is that because the appliance is so easily removed, the patient must fully cooperate by wearing it at all times, except to eat. Not wearing the Invisalign® aligner for any length of time (for example, while sleeping) will only prolong the treatment plan.
One thing is certain, regardless of what type of orthodontics you choose, there will be periodic soreness of teeth and gums due to the fact that teeth are being moved.
Who can wear Invisalign®?
Here at Magnolia Family Dental, we are able to fit both adults and teenagers with Invisalign® braces, as long as all their adult teeth are in. For young people still awaiting some adult teeth, you can either delay treatment or we can refer you to a specialist able to help you.
The majority of patients needing their teeth straightened are good candidates for Invisalign®, but we would need to see you in person to make a determination.
